Assignments

His first assignment was in the Jagst River Valley in the city of Ellwangen, Germany with Elder Middleton. After he broke his leg and ankle on July 18th he was hospitalized for 10 days and then he returned home to recover. He served one transfer in the Albuquerque NM Mission from January 4 - February 15, 2010 and served on the Navajo Reservation with Elder Lee.

He returned to Zurich on February 16, 2010. His first assignment was to serve with Elder King in Offenburg, Germany. The city is located in the Kinzig River Valley and adjacent to the Black Forest. The nearest large town is Strasbourg, France. He then served in a companionship with Elders Baird and Vaniturt in Offenburg.
On June 24th he was called to serve in Heilbronn with Elder Aeschbacher, who is from Switzerland. He is excited to serve with a native German speaker and hopes this will help him improve his language skills. On August 18, 2010 he was transferred to the city of Tubingen and called to be a companion with Elder Mildon.

My Super Sweet Dictionary

Well this is my second week out here in Offenburg. Everything is still going kind of slow. All the district leader meetings were at the very beginning of the transfer (this past week), plus we have Zone Conference on this Tuesday. On Monday we got to teach a less active who was happy to have us over and show us his ridiculously huge selection of music. He rented out a second apartment just for his music. I don't know how anyone would even have enough time to listen to all those cds, tapes and vinyls throughout their whole life but aparently he has.
After that we went over to Freiburg to hang out with Elder Owen and Elder Griffes for the rest of our pday. Nothing exciting we just played pool at their church building. On Tuesday we had district meeting in Freiburg. Since our district consists of four people it was pretty much just talking the whole time. Everyone had 2 or 3 assignments for the meeting so everything was really short and sweet. After district meeting we had to go to Singen because we needed to be in Zürich the next day and so we had to stay the night somewhere.
We did have some time in Freiburg though so we went by a book store since I lost my dictionary earlier. I got this super sweet dictionary that teaches you every word - not just translates it.
After that we took our train and met up with Elder Bushnell and Elder Tavachkai (don't know if thats spelled right). We went to Schwarzesmeer which is supposed to have the best döners out here. It cost about 4 euro to get a yufka which is kind of like the burrito equilvalent of a döner. It was pretty good but I don't really think it's the best in our whole mission.
The next day we went into Zürich for a meeting for the zone leaders and our district leaders. While they all did that the rest of us paired up with people and went and talked to some people near the train station. I went around with Elder Baird who is fairly new but his German is still pretty good and we ended up setting up two appointments with people we found for the elders in that area. That was pretty sweet.
After that we took a train home and stopped by in a place called Rust (which is pronounced Roost). Rust is pretty cool is has Europa Park which is this huge theme park out here that people like to visit. We didn't go there though. We ended up walking for about an hour and a half to get to this less active ladies house and then when we got there she told us to come back some other time. So we left and got a bus back since it was now around 8 and we needed to get a train home.
On Thursday we finally had our first day since I've been here where we did not travel outside of our area so we had the whole day to do missionary work, which was sweet. We went to this city called Kehl that is right on the border of France. In fact, you get off the train and there is a bridge to the right and if you get on that bridge you are in France. So we tried to visit some less actives and did about 4 hours of doors and only got 1 lesson with this older lady who is a member who just can't make it to church because of health problems. We talked to her, gave her the sacrament and then went back to the train station. We got onto our train and as soon as it started moving I said I was pretty sure we were going the wrong direction. Elder King didn't believe me at first until we started passing over the Rhein. So we had to get off at the next stop in France. We got to chill in France for about 25 minutes until the next train came. I realized that it was the 25th and would have been my year mark date had I not broken my leg. So I guess that is how I celebrated it.
On Friday we stayed in Offenburg and went around dooring in our area. Yet again no one let us in but a couple people talked to us and told us we could try coming by some other time. That was pretty much it for Friday. On Saturday we went to Lahr which is also a pretty large city. We went to contact this referral we got and the man let us in and we taught him the first lesson and left him with a Book of Mormon. He told us to come by next week so we are finally up to 1 investigator - woo hoo.
After that we met with some members and then they took us by a less active who didn't have time to talk because he was on his way to work so we went to this döner shop and got some yufkas. They were awesome. Cheaper than Schwarzesmeer and about just as good plus they are in our area so we think we will go to Lahr every Saturday and make it a weekly thing.
On Sunday I got to give a short talk so I talked about service and read the story about the Good Samaritan and talked a litle about that. Our branch consists of about 13 or 15 members and Elder King told me that was a good week so we'll see how that goes. After that we tried going back to the area were people told us we could try again and no one let us in. After that we went and met up with the Freiburg elders at the train station. They are staying the night with us since we are going to meet our zone for pday and then going to zone conference tomorrow. Well that is about it hope all is well.

Love, Elder Hargett

  1. I love to read the blog every week! It is so interesting. I am going to have to look up recipe's for the food Jeff talks about so I know what he's been eating, lol. Uncle John would probably be in heaven going to the the guy's house with all the music. Keep up the good work Jeff, you're awesome!
