Assignments

His first assignment was in the Jagst River Valley in the city of Ellwangen, Germany with Elder Middleton. After he broke his leg and ankle on July 18th he was hospitalized for 10 days and then he returned home to recover. He served one transfer in the Albuquerque NM Mission from January 4 - February 15, 2010 and served on the Navajo Reservation with Elder Lee.

He returned to Zurich on February 16, 2010. His first assignment was to serve with Elder King in Offenburg, Germany. The city is located in the Kinzig River Valley and adjacent to the Black Forest. The nearest large town is Strasbourg, France. He then served in a companionship with Elders Baird and Vaniturt in Offenburg.
On June 24th he was called to serve in Heilbronn with Elder Aeschbacher, who is from Switzerland. He is excited to serve with a native German speaker and hopes this will help him improve his language skills. On August 18, 2010 he was transferred to the city of Tubingen and called to be a companion with Elder Mildon.

Captain's Log (ok, really it's Mom's Notes)

Well, Jeff had to come home to recover from his accident. He has been home since early August and is doing very well. He saw the doctor on Oct 26th and still isn't physically ready to return to his mission but the doctor is hopeful that a release will come in the next 4-6 weeks. I will be honest to say that this has been a challenge for Jeff; it's probably very hard to go from the full activity of a missionary to being laid up and unable to do much. Now that he is out of the walking cast and can bear weight on the foot, he is able to do much more and has suprised us with a clean house and working outside on some paint removal on the house. We love having him home but are almost as anxious as he is to see him get back to the work the Lord called him to do. We have had wonderful support from family (grandma came for an entire month to help!) and friends, we are so blessed!!! President Matern has tried to keep Jeff focused by sending him some work he could do from his seated position and writes Jeff in German on a regular basis. What a great man President Matern is - how fortunate for the missionaries in the Switzerland Zurich Mission to have him as their leader. Sister Matern washed, mended and organized the clothing and other belongings that Jeff left at the mission home. As a mom I am so grateful for her service to my son. Thanks to everyone for your cards, letters, emails and visits. We are thankful to have so many wonderful people touching our lives.

  1. so glad to hear he is well. Its great to know that he will be able to serve again in switzerland. It would be nice if he could serve with gareth again before gareth leaves in june. It was very sad what happened. Hope he recovers well. My prayers are with you all. Love Debbie (Elder Middleton's Mum) x
